Bracket Racing

Bracket racing is a sport that far too many people are afraid to get into.
People are often afraid to participate, because they don't understand
what makes this type of racing fair for all race entrants. In a bracket
race, it doesn't matter what type of vehicle you drive, or even how fast
it goes. This is probably the only type of motor sport that is truly fair.

This fairness is accomplished using a handicapped starting system that
allows each racer to choose his or her own handicap. Just beyond the
starting line, there is a set of lights called the "Christmas Tree." This set of
lights is what tells each racer when to begin the race. When the green
light comes on, the race has begun. Before each race, each racer "dials in"
their vehicle's Elapsed Time (the time it takes the vehicle to travel 1/4 mile)
on their own window. This allows the race track officials to handicap the
start of the race. The green light will come on in the slower car's lane first,
allowing that competitor a head start. The head start given is exactly the
difference between the two vehicle's elapsed times. If either competitor
leaves the starting line before the green light comes on, it is an automatic
disqualification and a loss.

Your reaction time is measured from when the light turns green

until your vehicle leaves the starting line.

The race is won by whoever crosses the finish line first. To keep
things fair, if a racer runs an elapsed time quicker than their "dial in" time,
they automatically lose the race. This is called a "Breakout." Each
competitor needs to rely on their own skills to have a better Reaction time
than the other driver, and be careful not to breakout at the finish line
Practice makes perfect in bracket racing, and it only costs a few bucks
at your local track to give it a try.
